Laura Gallagher
Laura Gallagher is a writer, entrepreneur, and trailblazer. She is the President and founder of The Creative Company, a public relations and marketing firm in Madison, Wisconsin, and Mathetria Press, LLC, a publishing company.
Laura grew up on the edge of Apple River, Illinois, in a rented farmhouse. This little village is in the driftless area filled with hills and valleys, rivers, and streams.
When she was eight, her family moved to Warren, five miles down the road. Her fondest memories are of her earlier years with family and friends nearby in Apple River.
Her dad’s brothers owned several small businesses in town. If you needed groceries, you went to Uncle Leo’s Grocery Store. You went to Lyle’s Gas Station if you needed gas or your car repaired. When you wanted to go out for breakfast, Uncle Joey’s cafe is where the townspeople gathered for a hot cup of coffee, some eggs, hashbrowns and local “news”. Her Aunts Helen and Aggie lived in Apple River with their husbands and kids, and Uncle Jim lived nearby on a farm with his family.
Her Grandpa Gallagher and their brothers lived in Apple River, too, along with a multitude of first and second cousins. It seemed as though there was always someone to play with as cousins came and went to see Aunt Donna, Uncle Bill, Laura, and Lavonne. Families gathered together then more often than they do now. Going visiting was popular. Picnics at the nearby Apple Canyon State Park happened frequently along with long walks on the “Billy Goat Gruff” trail. Sandwiches were made and kids piled in the cars. These were the good old days.
In an effort to reclaim this joy in her life, Laura embarked on an unusual path by returning home again to invest in her Great Uncle and Aunt’s home. This book is about discoveries she made along the way. It’s a slower way of living with fewer commitments and more casual conversations. There is time to look at the night sky while sitting with a friend or two on the front porch. There is time to write, to host, and to play here.
Laura remains active in her company but now enjoys long weekends and vacations in Apple River.
It’s also where she writes. She hopes to write more books about meaning, purpose, and the people and places we call home.
